If you live in the UK, you probably know last Sunday was Mother’s Day. I am lucky enough to be a mum of two amazing girls, aged 6 and 8. The greatest thing about Mother’s Day wasn’t the gifts, but the reminder of how lucky I am to be a mum. To be completely honest, the decision to have kids was never really straightforward for me. Early on, I didn’t see a life with children. I was completely focused on my career. Then at 35, for a variety of reasons, I decided to have children. Luckily I didn’t run into problems, had two girls and have been on the most profound journey ever since.
Yesterday I received cards from each of my daughters – a true window into who they are and our relationship. My eldest spent some precious free-time at school (time which doesn’t happen very often) to make me a Mother’s Day card. For her to selflessly use her time was a tribute to how loving, caring and generous she is. My other daughter, our youngest wrote the reasons why she loves me. I’m a ‘loveing machine’ she said. I laughed. You can’t make this stuff up. It is honest, genuine and completely adorable.
Motherhood is a spectacular journey for which I am grateful. With all of the joys and experiences that my children bring into my life, I can’t imagine my life without them. Like most mums, there are however times amidst the tantrums and drama (and believe me with two girls there is DRAMA), that I do think about what my life would be like without children. But I keep coming back to what my children have taught me – about love, adventure and the need for society to empower girls.
As I’ve mentioned before on my Blog, my kids are the reason I started ON! Juniper. Had I not had them, my journey would be completely different. But I love this journey and I look forward to it continuing, including all the Mother’s Days that lie ahead.
