Know someone is suffering from eczema? Organic cocoa butter makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift or Easter present. In our latest blog we are looking at why organic cocoa butter is a fabulous moisturiser for anyone and especially great for those suffering from eczema.
Due to the chocolatey fragrance and skin-friendly properties of cocoa butter, it is often associated with nourishment and luxury. If you’ve ever taken a piece of raw, organic cocoa butter and rubbed it on your hands, you’ll know what I mean. Organic cocoa butter nourishes the skin by deeply moisturising and providing a barrier that leaves the skin silky smooth. The last point in particular makes it exceptionally good for people suffering from eczema.
As someone who has dermatitis (a form of eczema), I can attest to the benefits of organic cocoa butter. I’m not the only one looking for products that soothe the skin and alleviate skin conditions either. According to the National Eczema Society, “one in five children and one in twelve adults have eczema, while eczema and contact dermatitis (a form of eczema) account for 84-90% of occupational skin disease.”
In case you aren’t familiar with how eczema develops, here’s a quick 101 lesson. Eczema occurs when the skin’s natural protective barrier stops functioning properly, leaving gaps in the protective barrier and decreasing the skin’s ability to retain moisture. These gaps allow bacteria or irritants to pass through more easily. This leaves the skin prone to irritation, cracking or becoming inflamed – classic symptoms of eczema.
Organic cocoa butter is particularly good for people suffering from eczema because it helps to seal the skin and provide a better protective barrier, with less gaps. Next question you may ask: what exactly is in organic cocoa butter to fill these gaps and enable a protective barrier to form? There are a couple of important elements.
First, our organic cocoa butter is rich in polyphenols (an antioxidant). Polyphenols help to lower the risk of free radicals and enhance skin cell growth. In other terms, cocoa butter helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, retain elasticity and repair skin. With this in mind, organic cocoa butter aids in filling gaps and providing a protective seal on the skin. In helping to restore the skin’s protective barrier, bacteria or irritants cannot easily penetrate the skin. The introduction of bacteria or irritants is one reason why the skin of those suffering with eczema becomes irritated and/or inflamed.
Second, our organic cocoa butter is high in essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are important for our skin as they moisturise into the deep layers of the skin and enable the body to retain moisture. This helps to moisturise dry and flakey skin common to those suffering from eczema. Organic cocoa butter is especially high in Oleic acid, Palmitic Acid and Stearic Acid, which work well together to nourish and moisturise skin.
For many who find comfort in the smell of chocolate, cocoa butter also promotes relaxation. This in combination with organic cocoa butter’s moisturising properties (which leave the skin feeling silky soft) can help alleviate stress and anxiety. These effects can relax the immune system, an important consideration for people suffering from eczema. Why exactly? Eczema is an autoimmune disease. A product which helps to relax the immune system, can in turn, help to alleviate autoimmune diseases, like eczema.
At ON! Juniper our first-hand experience in using organic cocoa butter is magical and that’s why we use it in our product lines. We have developed a much-loved chocolate lip balm, made with fragrant and ohhh so-smooth organic cocoa butter. As an avid user, I can attest that our chocolate lip balm moisturises, nourishes and creates a barrier to protect against environmental elements that can cause lips to crack and peel. In fact, the chocolate lip balm is my favourite amongst all of our lip balms due to the silky feel it leaves on my lips…and the smell is nice too!
We’ve also recently developed some luxurious and super-moisturising organic cocoa butter bath + body melts. It’s a great Valentine’s Day or Easter gift because it can be used in two ways – in the bath or on the skin. By popping it into the bath, the organic cocoa butter will melt, providing a moisturising bath. Alternatively, gently rubbing organic cocoa butter directly on the skin will remove dryness. Both will leave your skin feeling super moisturized and silky smooth.
